What's an ESSA?

ESSA stands for Emotinal Support Stuffed Animal, so they are stuffed animals used to help to put people at ease during stressful times of need. A lot of neurodivergent people and mentally ill people have an ESSA to be able to regulate their emotions and keep themselves stable in anxiety ridden public spaces. However, ESSAs are NOT service animals and cannot task as some claim (obviously), they also CANNOT be reactive. This kind of rhetoric harms the ESA, Service animal, and ESSA community all together. There are also DSSAs, they are disability support stuffed animals meant to help with disabilities like Autism, ADHD, or even PTSD during episodes and so on. The biggest difference is that they are meant strictly for regulation and ESSAs are for comfort it stressful times.

Are there rules for what determines an ESSA?

Of course not! An ESSA can be ANY animal of ANY shape and size, not all ESSAs have to be Douglas Cuddle Toys branded, domesticated animals, or even real animals at all! Your ESSA is your comfort item and yours alone, you don't need to fit under any "standard". Your ESSA is also NOT required to have gear, it's just something other owners like to provide for their ESSAs but it doesn't make your companion less of an ESSA.
