Free Improvisation, Free Jazz, Free Music
Hello!
This is a place where you can discuss free improvisation and free jazz
Q: What is free improvisation?
A: A style of music created spontaneously, without preset harmony, rhythm, or form, emphasizing real-time creativity and interaction.
Q: What is free jazz?
A: An avant-garde jazz style that rejects fixed chord changes and forms, focusing on collective improvisation, expressive freedom, and unconventional sounds.
Q: Isn’t it just a bunch of random sounds?
A: Quite possibly! But sometimes it’s not. Either way, this kind of music can evoke emotions, and that’s one of the reasons we value it.
Q: Who are some free improvisation/free jazz performers?
A: Some key figures are Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, Keith Jarrett, Sun Ra, Keith Rowe, Eric Dolphy and many, many others.
Q: Where should I start?
A: That’s actually a tough question. It depends on your musical tastes, because improvisers often draw inspiration from all kinds of genres: jazz, blues, classical, standards, folk, rock, regional music, electronic… So to figure out the best place to start, just ask!
