WWI

"World War One was the most colossal, murderous, mismanaged butchery that has ever taken place on earth. Any writer who said otherwise lied, so the writers either wrote propaganda, shut up, or fought."

 - Ernest Hemingway

(Served as a Red Cross Ambulance Driver in WWI, and was awarded the Italian Silver Medal of Valor after being wounded by muktiple shards of Shrapnel whilst serving in Italy. His first hand experience in the war led him to write his most famous book, A Farewell to Arms).
